Is Punta Mita Safe? Is Sayulita? The Question Everyone Googles
You googled it quietly, so here is the answer out loud, honestly.
The regional picture
This corridor is a different reality from the border headlines that shape perceptions of Mexico. Banderas Bay's economy runs on international tourism and foreign residents, tens of thousands of Americans and Canadians live here full time, and the region's safety record reflects decades of that alignment. The towns of the north shore, Bucerias, La Cruz, Sayulita, San Pancho, are walkable day and night in their centers, with the small-town texture that makes that obvious within an hour of arriving.
Punta Mita specifically
A 1,500-acre peninsula with one controlled entrance, internal security, and two of the world's most security-conscious hotel brands anchoring it. Communities inside add their own layers. It is, by construction, among the most secure residential addresses in Latin America. The honest risks inside the gates involve golf handicaps.
Sayulita and the surf towns
Busy, bohemian, and fundamentally safe. The practical realities: petty opportunism where crowds gather (watch the phone at festivals, as anywhere), surf and currents that deserve respect (swim the protected beaches, Playa de los Muertos for families), and golf-cart-and-cobblestone physics after margaritas. That is the genuine list.
What residents actually do
The same things smart residents do everywhere: solid locks and a safe in rental properties, lights on timers, a property manager who checks in, and registration with their embassy if they like. Gated communities and managed buildings handle most of it structurally. Ask the thousands of foreign owners here for their security stories and you will mostly collect shrugs.
The bottom line
If safety is the hesitation between you and this coast, take it off the list and replace it with the real questions: which town, which season, rent or buy. Those have interesting answers.
