Which Punta Mita Break Fits Your Level

Costa · Local guide to the Mexican Pacific coast · Updated October 2026
Choose El Anclote or Stinky's if you are learning, La Lancha if you are comfortable on a green wave and want a little power, and Punta Burros, La Bahia or El Faro only if you are an experienced reef surfer. When in doubt, take a coach or a local to your first session.

Questions to ask before you paddle out

A note on judgment

Reef breaks reward patience. A surfer who is solid in Sayulita or on sand can still find Punta Mita's outer reefs unforgiving. Start at the gentle breaks, then step up when you know the tide and the entries.

Who this is not for

If your group includes children or first-timers who want to learn in an organized setting on a beach, a surf lesson at La Lancha or a day at a sandy beach is a better start than any outer reef.

Tell Costa your dates and who surfs in your group in the chat, and we will match you with villas that fit.

Questions people ask

Which Punta Mita break is easiest?

El Anclote and Stinky's are described by local guides as the easiest, with slow, long rights.

Is La Lancha safe for beginners?

It has a beginner beach wave and a more powerful wedge. Rocks are a real hazard, so go with a coach.

Can intermediates surf Punta Burros?

Guides describe it as a hollow right-hand reef wedge best for intermediate to advanced surfers, with extra punch on a southerly swell.

Do I need a coach?

It is wise for your first sessions. A coach knows the entry, the tide and the day's swell.

What if conditions are too big for me?

Skip the outer reef. The village breaks, calm beaches and boat days give you something to do.
