What drives the seasons
Wavetribe notes that southwest swells are most common April through October, west-northwest swells December through March, and tropical swells from storms to the west June through October. Winter brings west and northwest swell into Banderas Bay with cleaner northerly offshore winds.
Punta Mita is exposed to a wide swell window, so breaks take turns. La Lancha is mainly a November to March wave on northwest swell. El Anclote works all year, with spring cleanest by statistics. Punta Burros shows its best statistics in winter, though it can also wake up on southerly swell in summer.
What to bring
- Winter: a springsuit or rash guard.
- Summer: boardshorts, strong reef-safe sun protection and shade.
- A longboard or fish for most days; a shortboard for the hollow reef waves.
Planning around hurricane season
Tropical swell is part of the summer pattern. Hurricane season runs through autumn, so watch forecasts and keep dates flexible if you travel then.
Who this is not for
If you need consistent heavy surf, Punta Mita is not a heavy-wave destination. Wavetribe notes faces rarely exceed 6 to 8 feet, and bigger surf comes only a limited number of days each year.
