Reef and Rock Safety When Surfing

Costa · Local guide to the Mexican Pacific coast · Updated October 2026
Most Punta Mita surf breaks are coral reef and rock, so the main hazards are shallow reef, rocks and sea urchins, plus strong sun and sometimes localism. Surf-Forecast warns about urchins and rocks at Burros and Anclote, and Surfnerd warns that rocks are a real hazard at La Lancha.

How to reduce risk

Choosing a board

Wavetribe recommends a longboard or fish rather than a gun for Riviera Nayarit. Longboards and funboards are common at La Lancha and the village breaks, and shortboards suit the hollow reef waves. Ask a local surf shop or your coach for the right board for the day's swell.

Reading the forecast

Surf-Forecast and Surfnerd publish forecasts for the individual breaks. Compare swell direction, size and wind. Tide data for nearby Bahia is used by some pages. Always cross-check with a local before heading out.

Who this is not for

If you are not comfortable with shallow reef, surf a sandy beach or take a lesson from a coach who can pick the right wave.

Tell Costa your dates and who surfs in your group in the chat, and we will match you with the right villa.
