Punta Mita for First-Time Visitors

Costa · Local guide to the Mexican Pacific coast · Updated October 2026
Punta Mita is a gated peninsula on the northern tip of Banderas Bay in Riviera Nayarit, reached by flying into Puerto Vallarta. First-time visitors should know four things: the best weather is November to April, golf carts are how people get around inside the gates, beach club access depends on your villa, and a local guide can match you to the right community.

How Punta Mita works

The peninsula is about 1,500 acres with a single controlled entrance. Inside are residential communities such as Kupuri, La Punta Estates, Ranchos Estates, Las Palmas, Porta Fortuna, TAU Residences and Hacienda de Mita, along with two Jack Nicklaus golf courses, beach clubs and the Four Seasons and St. Regis hotels.

Outside the gates is the village of Punta de Mita, with restaurants strung along Avenida El Anclote. Hacienda de Mita is the one community with a direct walk into the village.

A good first week

Anchor each day with one thing: a boat day to the Marietas Islands, whale watching in winter, a surf lesson, a golf round or a spa day, and fill the rest with beach club time and dinners. A private chef can cook at the villa for some nights, with village dinners for the rest.

Who this is not for

If you want a busy town with markets and nightlife at your door, nearby Sayulita or Puerto Vallarta may suit a first trip better.

Tell Costa your dates, group size and must-haves in the chat, and we will send the current collection that fits.
