Rules that protect the whales

Humpbacks are protected, and whale watching in Mexico is governed by the standard NOM-131-SEMARNAT-2010. Boats must be certified and keep required distances, and touching or feeding whales is prohibited. Whale-watching restricted zones include 1.5 kilometers around the Marietas Islands and a 2-kilometer coastal strip between Punta Mita and the mouth of the Ameca river, according to Costa's season calendar.

Choosing an operator

Who this is not for

If you are visiting between April and November, whales will not be in the bay. Consider a boat day to the Marietas Islands or a fishing charter instead.

Tell Costa your dates, group and what you want to do in the chat, and we will plan it around your villa.
